The Arizona Weekend Read – 1

By alun | May 4, 2009

I have spent a disorientating weekend flying and attempting to become acclimatised to the heat in Arizona. I’m here for the Kolbe Professional Growth Seminar of which more later in the week. One of the advantages of long haul flights (and I can’t think of many) is the chance to catch up with some reading. I started well with “The Weekend Read” section of the blog but have stalled somewhat in recent months. So here are the three books that I have read since leaving Gatwick on Friday. One “sport”, one “fiction” and one biography.

First up What Sport Tells us about Life by Ed Smith. One thing that may put some people off this excellent book by the former Kent, Middlesex and England cricketer is the title. It’s a sports interest book in name only and will appeal to people who find the thought of following their team slavishly or spending hours in front of Sky Sports abhorent.

What it is about is people. How they work best, why they achieve what they do, what turns also-rans into winners and potential success into mediocre performance. As an individual and later a coach I have always been fascinated by the dynamism of teams and this slim, easily read book brings some great insights.

It will repay your time if you have any interest at all in human nature.

You can buy it from Amazon here.
